Argentina: Still mourning the death of folk singer Mercedes Sosa

mercedes_sosa1.jpg By Cecilia Mansilla ARGENTINA: The death of the "voice of Latin America," Mercedes Sosa, was an Argentinean story. As a result, October 2009 was a really sad month for us. It was when we lost one of our biggest artists. She was best known for her great songs such as "Gracias a la vida" ("Thanks to life") and "Si calla el cantor" ("If the singer is silenced"). "I didn't choose to sing for people", Sosa...

Federal Reserve economic report disputes claims of immigrants taking away jobs from Americans

32957967_Constructiobig.jpg LatinaLista.net -- A non-political report was released earlier this week that surprisingly received little media attention. It was published by the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco and titled The Effect of Immigrants on U.S. Employment and Productivity. After reviewing the research, it's easy to see why it didn't make headlines -- it didn't support one argument conservatives use to justify drafting punitive immigration laws. According to the author: ...there is no evidence that immigrants crowd out U.S.-born workers in either the short or long run. Second, the positive long-run effect on income per U.S.-born worker accrues over some time. In the short run, small insignificant effects are observed. Over the long run, however, a net inflow of immigrants equal to 1% of employment increases income per worker by 0.6% to 0.9%. This implies that total immigration to the United States from 1990 to 2007...

Caridad Svich is one playwright filled with "spirit"

Caridad Svich is a playwright, songwriter, editor and translator. Born of Cuban, Argentine, Spanish and Croatian parentage, this Latina brings her unique perspective when crafting plays.

In an interview published in the journal The Dramatist, Svich shares: "Literally and structurally, I think of plays as composition: theme and variation, point and counterpoint, melody line and rhythm line, image and counter-image, motion and stasis, silence and noise. Plays live in space and time, as music does. With some plays, I plan to write songs, but often, characters simply will start singing instead of speaking and I know then that the play will use music. It's a mysterious process."

One of Svich's latest plays is based on the novel by Isabel Allende, "The House of the Spirits." This year, it received a reading at the 2010 Colorado New Play Summit. In this Skype interview with the summit's organizers, Svich explains her creative process behind "The House of the Spirits."
