It's no secret that among U.S. Latinos, those of Mexican descent comprise the segment that has the most to lose when it comes to pounds and waistlines. To say it's in the (j)genes, is an understatement.

While past analysis has faulted assimilation in U.S. culture as the culprit for weight gain, it's being found that the folks back home in Mexico aren't that healthy anymore either. Could it possibly have something to do with the fact that all the major U.S. fast food chains can now be found across the border — we ask sarcastically.

Well, anyway, it seems the Mexican government jumped on the bandwagon of helping their citizens lose weight this past summer. President Felipe Calderon created the "Vamos por Más kilos" campaign.

Not sure how successful it's been so far but one group in the U.S. wants to help Mexico in a show of binational support. PETA officials tell Latina Lista that they want to help Mexico by showing them how to go vegetarian!

PETA sent a letter to President Calderon recently explaining what it all entails — and for fajita-loving eaters, it ain't going to be fácil.

Evidently, PETA knows this and so they've created a special vegetarian starter kit. Dubbing it Sea Vegetariano, the site, in Spanish, provides everything from recipes to how to make the switch from meat to leaf.

For Mexicanos, it actually shouldn't be too hard to go vegetarian since the site points out that the pillars of Latino diet anyway are rice, beans, corn and bread.

But for one of the countries that prizes the pageantry of killing bulls, it will be a harder sell than getting everyone to exercise on a regular basis.
