Just In: Democratic Presidential Candidates Accept Univision's Forum Invitation

Categorized under | Tags: , , ,

A press release from Univision and the University of Miami announce a full roster of Democratic presidential hopefuls have accepted the Spanish-language television's network invitation to appear at the Democratic Presidential Candidate Forum.

The Democratic candidates participating in the forum, in alphabetical order are: Senator Joe Biden, Senator Hillary Clinton, Senator Chris Dodd, Senator John Edwards, Senator Mike Gravel, Congressman Dennis Kucinich, Senator Barack Obama and Governor Bill Richardson.

It will be held on Sunday, September 9th at the University of Miami's BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, Florida and moderated by Univision's anchors Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas.

The Republican candidate forum is slated for September 16 but in the Univision press release, it read "additional details to follow in the coming weeks."

Given the track record of the Republican candidates appearing at Hispanic events this summer, chances aren't very good that a Republican candidate forum will become a reality.

I might actually have to watch this one. I wonder if anyone (excepting Richardson) will butcher a banal phrase in Spanish--seems inevitable.

No creo Univision sea el lugar
para un debate presidencial,
esta emisora es conocida por
su politica reacionaria y en
contra de los intereses de la
poblacion. Que preguntaran ?
Si van a tumbar a Chavez? y
nada de los problemas de la
poblacion aca.

But Univision's viewing public is pretty much located exclusively in the U.S., correct? The channel may skew conservative on social issues (as, arguably, does the Hispanic population in general) but still find more common ground with the Democrats than the GOP due to the dynamics of group politics and the current immigration debate. I don't get the sense that this is a "wolf in sheep's clothing" situation like the Fox offer to sponsor a Democratic debate, but I could be wrong.

Question: For an anglophone like myself, am I correct that this will have no English subtitles? The little I've seen about univision is that they don't do that. While I generally understand and respect that, it is a shame in this case since I'd still like to watch. I guess someone else will eventually dub and post it on Youtube.
